Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett announced today the formation of the Latino Advisory Committee (LAC), the District’s first-ever, Latino-focused task force designed to increase engagement with the Latino community and to enhance the educational success of Latino students. The LAC seeks to accomplish its mission by uniting Chicago’s Latino leaders in order to provide support to Latino students, teachers, administrators, and families at CPS.

hero-duseks hero-thaliaBeginning February 1st 2014 Dusek’s Board & Beer will Contribute $1 out of every 5rabbit Fabulosa Porter sold to Pilsen’s local arts initiative: Art in Public Places (AiPP).

The AIPP effort is spearheaded by 25th Ward Alderman Solis’ office to transform neglected, inactive spaces or sites plagued with vandalism…and connect artists with creative opportunities throughout the ward.

This will be the first in an ongoing ‘Cause Beer’ series committed to supporting a variety of Pilsen Community endeavors, with a new beneficiary selected each month.

You’ve always dreamed that you could do some good just by bellying up; it’s really happening.

Pilsen’s breakfast scene is well known for such dishes as huevos con carne and chilaquiles, but one new restaurant is betting there is room for such American standards as pancakes and homemade turkey sausage. The new eatery Bistro 18, at 1640 W. 18th St., was conceived by chef/owner Rafael Bautista, who saw a lack of American-style breakfast items in the neighborhood.


Open Books Warehouse Open to the Public!

The Open Books warehouse in Pilsen is the center for all book operations, including processing, pickup coordination, online commerce, and book grants.  The warehouse also includes a store where the public, particularly educators and families, have direct purchasing access to a large stock of assorted specially priced books. Prices start as low as $1 per book; leveled books are available for $3 per book.   As always, all proceeds help support their literacy programs in Chicago.

NEW ONLINE TOOLS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

New Small Business Center Site Now Available in both English and Spanish

Site Selector Site Will Help Business Owners Search for Everything from Commercial Properties to Zoning Requirements and Available Incentives

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced today two online tools to help small business owners access critical services that will help them get started and grow.  The first is a website for the Small Business Center (SBC), availablein English and Spanish that will serve as a one stop shop for entrepreneurs and business owners.  The second, which was completed in conjunction with World Business Chicago, is a new and improved Site Selector tool to help small businesses search for commercial sites available for lease or sale.  Both sites were developed in cooperation with the Mayor’s Innovation Delivery Team and following consultations with businesses and the Mayor’s Small Business Advisory Council.   (more…)

CHICAGO - January is National Radon Action Month and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is encouraging Chicagoans to test their home for harmful levels of radonRadon is a natural colorless, odorless radioactive gas and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.  The best time to test homes for radon is during cold-weather months when windows are shut and elevated levels of radon are more likely to be detected.

“Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk,” said Dr. Cortland Lohff, CDPH Medical Director for Environmental Health.  “Taking action to test and fix high levels of radon gas is not only a strong investment for your health but also for your home.” (more…)
